The history of Montana LongGuns, Inc
actually began with Bob James over 55 years
ago. As an adolescent growing up in
Missouri, Bob was a pretty good shot with
his .22 rim fire. He could hit anything he
wanted, dead on. But when he would take his
Daddy’s 12 gauge out, he wasn’t even close
to hitting what he pointed at. He looked
right down the barrel & sighted it the same
way as that .22, but would still miss. What
in the world could have changed? Thus began
a life long journey to understand, research
and define what the “Point of Impact” is and
how it can be made repeatable.

Over the next 30 years Bob trained and
worked at Purdy’s, Holland & Holland and
Stevens Favorites, while honing his skills
as a Master Gunsmith and learning the
intricate details of fine guns. This
eventually led him to Montana in 1988 where
he met his wife Phyllis, and eventually
opened Bob’s Custom Gun Shop in Polson.
Throughout these years, Bob hired and
trained skilled craftsman to carry on his
legacy.

During this tenure in Montana Bob was able
to spend more time on the Point of Impact problem,
his true passion in life. With guidance from
shooting coaches, gun fitters, optometrists,
psychologists, and medical doctors, Bob continued to
study how people mounted their guns and tracked
their targets. He always knew that if you’re not
mounting your gun in a naturally comfortable and
therefore repeatable position, your mind & eyes will
constantly attempt to make slight variations on each
shot, meaning you have little chance of being
repeatable. Bob’s Point of Impact GunFitting has
proven so successful that he has become
internationally renowned and is considered in a
class by himself in this area of study. Many of
today’s top Team USA and Master Class shooters have
worked with Bob in refining their technique and guns
to break more targets.

In 2005, we created
the Montana GunFitting Academy. Under the guidance of
Bob & Phyllis, this division now conducts Gun Fitting
Clinics and Personal Gun Fittings and is the only facility
providing a comprehensive gun fitting training program
that leads to becoming a Certified Gun Fitter.

In 2006, Montana LongGuns, Inc. created it’s
second division, Montana Custom Gunstocks to
better define and serve our clients that
require stock making services. This division
is your source for precision gunsmithing,
stock making, restorations, checkering and
finishing. |
